Llandyssil Old School Hall receives
£25,000 Community Renewal Grant
The Llandyssil Community Charitable Trust has received £25,000 from the Community Renewal Grant Scheme for the renovation of the Old School Hall, Llandyssil. The Community Renewal Grant Scheme is being delivered by Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) as part of the Powys Rural Development Plan 2007-2013. The scheme aims to support local community projects that take account of a community’s needs and aspirations, improve the level of facilities available and provide a sense of place. The project has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Andrew Lloyd, Chair of the Trust, commented :
“I was born in this village and have a young family. The Old School Hall, as the only community facility in Llandyssil, has always been at the heart of this village. The fact that the Hall may have had to close brought the village together to work with the Church in Wales to find a way forward. Having signed a lease last year, the award of this grant will enable us to undertake the necessary repairs and renovations to make the Hall a warm, attractive and comfortable place to meet and a very special and lasting resource for the people of Llandyssil. "
Next year’s Dragonfest will be held on 11th September and
will be an even greater celebration. Do come!
Carl Cooper, PAVO’s Chief Executive Officer said:“PAVO is delighted to be delivering the Community Renewal Grant Scheme. It provides small scale voluntary and community groups in Powys with an opportunity to make a difference at a local level, identify their potential, and celebrate the individuality of our communities in Powys. This grant scheme is another example of how the third sector can and does improve people's lives.”
Background After several years of discussions, a 25 year lease was signed with the Church in Wales in 2008 to secure the Old School Hall for use by the community of Llandyssil. The Hall, a classic Victorian small school building, is the only community facility in the village and is already used by many groups including the WI, line dancers, youth club , gardening club and Tai Chi. There are numerous ideas being put forward to increase Hall usage once the work has been completed. Major renovation work however was required to ensure the Hall could meet the needs of current and potential users. Last winter, with the guidance of the local County Councillor, Wynne Jones, and local agencies, the Llandyssil Community Charitable Trust raised the money for a new roof. The Community Renewal Grant will now enable new double glazed windows, a new floor, a better heating system to be installed and the renovation of the old panelling to be undertaken.
