Llandyssil Walking Group

Following a Rights of Way Meeting on 6th February 2008, a Llandyssil Walking Group was formed. Working closely with Ben Humphreys at Powys County Council and the Community Council, the Group supports the opening up and promotion of public footpaths and Rights of Way and development of around four circular walks in the Parish of Llandyssil. Iolo Williams kindly agreed to be Honorary President.

The objective of the group was to gain support form Powys County Council for the opening up of four circular walks in the around the village.

At the instigation of Cllr Wynne Jones a grant of £1,100 was obtained from Sports Council Wales a) to install a fixed Route Map Board which the Community Council has agreed could be on the outside (south) of the bus shelter, and b) to install a few directional posts and develop leaflets. The grant was conditional on a number of Led Walks being provided and for Powys County Council to be sent copies of any promotional material – posters/newsletter. The notice board is now in place.

Four led walks were held and reports sent in to Powys County Council and the Ramblers Association. In due course when the final routes have opened up by Powys County Council maps will be produced and put in the noticeboard.

In early September 2008, Victoria Tombs, the new Council Rights of Way area officer for South Montgomeryshire confirmed that Llandyssil would be the next priority area to have selected Rights of Way opened up. Works are still currently ongoing in and around Churchstoke and therefore will not commence in Llandyssil until some time in the Summer. As a first step Powys County Council has asked a consultant to prepare draft orders for four locations in Llandyssil to try to move paths away from working farmyards. This is really good news and a tribute to everyone who has supported the programme and made representation to Powys County Council.

There is a lot of interest within the village. Do contact Lynn Davies (668247) or John Billington (668619) if you would like to be involved in this project. Everyone is welcome.
